Teacher Reflection- Graphic Organizer
I might use the graphic organizer strategy at the beginning, middle and end of a unit. I think it is important to see what students prior knowledge is of the topic. In the middle of the unit it would be useful to go back to the organizer that was created at the beginning and add or modify what had been developed. Then at the end of the unit students should be able to finally make adjustments and connections to how the entire topic pieces together. Therefore, could be used as a culminating learning activity throughout the unit.
A few challenges that may arise are students not being able to fill out the organizer at all or students struggling to connect the lines between the topics. Graphic organizers can be very challenging and often students can find more than one way to organize their thoughts on a particular topic. Therefore, I might let students choose the layout they like best that makes the most sense to them. I would also be sure to use this strategy over and over again within each unit as students will only become more comfortable with using the organizer the more chances they have to develop one.
I think it would be easy to see at the end of the unit if the organizer worked if a student can complete it to at least 90% accuracy. By utilizing this strategy throughout the entire unit it would be easy for the teacher to assess students progression at the beginning, middle and end of the unit. If a student were struggling I would be sure to pair them up with another student and/or have them create their own. By completing this strategy students are accomplishing making connections across the topic/unit in a visual way.
